Finally, the 78rd edition is up. Not too much has happened in the evolution blogosphere to my knowledge, so this edition is really short but good. Like short stories; can't be bothered by a whole novel. We have some of the regulars again, and then some new ones. Notably David Hume (pseudonym), who is a professor somewhere keeping his/her real identify a secret. It is thus our task to read Hume's posts carefully and figure out who this may be. Enjoy!

From now on every edition will be hosted here. Who the actual host will be may vary, but until someone volunteers without being asked, it will be yours truly. The reason for this change is that interest has been on the decline, both in hosting and in submitting posts. Failure to get anything published for November was the last straw. Luckily, people are still blogging about evolution, so the task at hand really is just to find those posts. So, if you ever see any, it would be great if you linked to it on the Facebook page, hit me up on Twitter, or email it.

Hitherto diversity has been encouraged. If you take a look at the hosting guidelines, it was suggested that the hosts be creative about how to present the monthly collection of evolution blog-posts. And that has been fun. However, with this transition I now elect to publish the forthcoming editions in a more streamlined manner. At this point in time I am not quite sure what that will entail, so the product will probably evolve with each edition. Lastly, for those who wish to reminisce, here's a list of the first 76 editions.

The November edition didn't go up as planned, unfortunately - this is a first, and I hope it will be the last. But it probably won't. Interest in CoE is declining (it probably is in blog carnivals in general), which I believe (on evidence) has a lot to do with social media; carnivals are a way to share your content, but Facebook, Twitter, etc. are taking over that job, it seems.

If you are interested in hosting take a look at these brief CoE hosting guidelines and then let me know.

C. Titus Brown (Lab page) has volunteered. It will be his first, and he will host on his blog Living in an Ivory Basement.

And the September edition will be at Sam Hardman's blog Ecologica.
However, we do not have a host...

What to do? Basically, without anyone to host, CoE will die. It may then revive the following month, but it's not like anyone has volunteered to host September either.

Are you willing to host?
Know anybody who might be?
Any other ideas?Bjørn Østmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08859177313382114917noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6706811940355978140.post-46238235594319934642014-07-15T11:20:00.003-04:002014-07-15T11:23:26.739-04:00Host for 74th edition? We need a host for the 74th edition in August. Thanks to Adam Goldstein for hosting. Spread the word.

There are 22 posts this month. That's not bad at all. It's not very many either (but the quality of the writing is top-notch). Participation in Carnival of Evolution is down. It seems Carnivals are a thing of the past. My guess is that social media has made this particular form of sharing blog-posts superfluous. I hope I'm wrong.

The number of different people who submit has gone down significantly. CoE now relies on a few regular contributors who submit their own as well as others' blog-posts. Notably Bradly Alicea (who has been active for a long time) and Charles Goodnight, who is a relative newcomer to blogging. Charles writes about theoretical evolution once a week and shares his posts via the CoE Facebook page. But I fear this is akin to biological systems of low diversity: they are more likely to go extinct when the system relies on a few generalist species.

I suppose it's good news that science bloggers don't feel the need to boost their readership by sharing their blog-posts with the 357 people who are subscribed to the feed on Facebook.

Interested in hosting this summer? Months open are July, August, September. Still a few seats left for those who hurry.

Due to a change in how the submission process works, some posts weren't caught until this afternoon. They have now been included. Consequently the guide for hosts has been updated to reflect this, emphasizing that people can submit posts both as a comment to the hosting announcement on the Facebook page, as well as by submitting to the page itself (which results in link that are a little bit hidden, for which we can only blame Zuckerberg and Sandberg).

The next host will be listed with links to their blog and a Twitter handle, if they have one. If you post a comment with a URL to a blog-post that you have written, or that someone else have written, about evolution, it will be included in the forthcoming edition (always at the discretion of the host).

I very much hope that this system will work well enough that CoE won't die an agonizing death like so many other science blog carnivals.
It is up on Bradly Alicea's blog Synthetic Daisies. I swear!
We need someone to host May 1st. BlogCarnival.com is down again, so we need to stop relying on it. That also means that it will be more of the job of the host to scour blogs to find suitable posts for the carnival. Are you up for that, then send an email to bjorn@bjornostman.com.Bjørn Østmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08859177313382114917noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6706811940355978140.post-74964518526330785182014-03-04T11:34:00.001-05:002014-03-04T11:34:13.562-05:00#69 at Lab RatThe 69th Carnival of Evolution is up at Shuna Gould's Lab Rat.

Which is great. So great.

But the problem is that BlogCarnival.com is "temporarily" down, and has been for close to a week. I don't know anything about when it will be up, of ever, and since it is the site we use to keep track of hosts and submissions, that does present a problem.

Does anyone have a better idea? Any other way to collect submissions?Bjørn Østmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08859177313382114917noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6706811940355978140.post-12688023836888606402014-02-01T17:03:00.002-05:002014-02-01T17:03:12.353-05:00Nope, it's out now: CoE #68I lied. Adam chose to list the names of the people who submitted the posts, rather than those who wrote them. Perhaps this will make a few people realize that for CoE to keep running, someone has to make sure posts are submitted.
